Samantha Nowland

My role in the seafood industry is an Aquaculture Research Scientist for the Northern Territory Governments Aquaculture Unit, at the Darwin Aquaculture Centre. I have a background in marine biology and aquaculture and my particular areas of research interest include; tropical aquaculture, women’s leadership in the seafood industry, sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture, and community empowerment through economic development.

I am a Territorian and passionate about Australian seafood and the ocean. Recently I completed my PhD on hatchery culture techniques for black-lip rock oysters to support Indigenous economic development in remote Northern Territory.

The biggest reward to working in the seafood industry is the incredible people I get to work with, from our industry partners, university researchers and international collaborations, to the communities and ranger groups we work with, and our Aquaculture Unit team. So many people with passion, drive and enthusiasm for the industry they support.
