Time in seafood industry– 7 years
My first real taste of fishery science was working as an observer on stock assessment surveys of the Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent Prawn Fishery and I haven’t looked back since.
I have worked at the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI- Aquatics), which is part of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), since 2009. I am a part of the Crustaceans sub-program that focuses on prawns, crabs and rock lobster. My current role as a Senior Research Officer involves undertaking research and stock assessments for the Blue Crab Fishery, Gulf St Vincent Prawn Fishery and West Coast Prawn Fishery.
What I love about my seafood industry – It is great to work in an applied field of science which allows me to interact with such a diverse group of people. Having the opportunity to work directly with fishers and industry and seeing first-hand what it is all about, provides excellent opportunities to undertake research to improve our knowledge of the different species and the ecosystem. I have also had a lot of opportunity to learn about fishery management and be involved in developing harvest strategies to ensure future sustainability.
Thoughts about my industry – The role of a fishery scientist can be challenging at times but can also be very rewarding. I think that maintaining good relationships between industry, scientists and managers is really important to successful fisheries. We all working towards a common goal of achieving sustainability so there is a great sense of achievement when things are moving in the right direction.
